Community Blog - Launching out of Early Access and onto Console

Well… We did it! Last week, we left Early Access and we’ve now launched Portal Knights in Europe and North America on console and of course, Steam. We’ve been on such a crazy roller-coaster of a ride since we launched into Early Access last year and looking back, we’re so proud of how far we’ve come. However, as we’ve said many times already, we couldn’t have got this far without the support and feedback from our players. It means everything to have you guys on board with us and be rest assured, we don’t plan to slow down anytime soon!

Let’s rewind to February 2016… February 4th to be precise. On this day in 2016, we announced our all-new action RPG title, Portal Knights, to the world. We had absolutely no idea how the community would react to it, so it was pretty terrifying, but exciting for the team.

Thankfully, the response to Portal Knights was positive and we began to see our community grow in the run-up to launch, which excited us greatly! You guys flooded our channels with questions, which is EXACTLY what we wanted to see! There was a level of excitement growing not only within the community but in the team. We were onto something here…

Leaving Early Access

With Portal Knights, the aim was simple. We wanted to grow the title with our community, for our community. At the end of the day, we wanted our players to love Portal Knights, which is why we wanted to involve you guys from the outset. When we entered Early Access on February 25th, we launched with a solid foundation, but instantly opened our doors to community feedback and suggestions. And boy, did you guys deliver! Our forums and social channels became flooded with your thoughts.

Early Access has given us the opportunity to really listen to our players and figure out what it is they want. Ever since day one, we committed ourselves to developing Portal Knights for many, many months to come. We never once ruled anything out, nor promised anything unless we were 100% sure we could make it happen.

Over the course of our Early Access launch, we implemented a ton of features in response to player feedback. First came a whole new selection of character customization options, then events, optional auto-aim and all-new weapons. Later down the line, we introduced larger islands, additional language support, key binding, controller support, vanity items, pets, NPC’s, water, split screen and much more! Every single one of these features came about in response to community feedback. For that, we want to say a massive thank you. YOU guys have helped shape our roadmap and we’ll forever be grateful.

You know, leaving Early Access is scarier than you think… What will new players think? Will our community think this is the end? So many questions! Be rest assured, just because we’ve now left Early Access, that doesn’t mean anything will change. Going forward, we fully intend on updating Portal Knights, like we always have done, and filling those updates with community requests. However, we can’t do this without your support. So please, keep talking to us and keep telling us what you want to see in-game!

Console Launch

As many of you will know already, last week, we launched Portal Knights onto PlayStation 4 and Xbox One across Europe. Today, we launch across North America. This is such an incredibly exciting time for the team and we’ve been truly overwhelmed by your positive messages. Bringing Portal Knights to console has been an enormous task for the team, but they’ve done it. Again, a massive thank you to our awesome community for the level of support shown between announcement and launch. It means so much to us!

Speaking of console… Let’s talk about Nintendo Switch for just a moment. Now, we know many of you will be wondering what’s going on, we want you to know it’s absolutely, definitely still happening, but not just yet! (None of that last sentence made sense, but you know what we’re getting at!) Whilst we don’t have any news to share today, we suggest you keep an eye on our social channels for the latest. Stay tuned! The team are making it happen.

What’s Next?

Good question! Well… Now we’ve launched out of Early Access and onto console, the team are working flat out behind the scenes on upcoming content. As we’ve said already, we have no intentions of slowing down anytime soon. The plan is to keep on involving our community as much as we can and keep on making Portal Knights the game you want it to be. We are already working on some truly exciting things behind the scenes and we can’t wait to share more info with you all.

Thank You

Let’s end this blog here by saying a HUGE thank you to each and every single one of you who has tweeted us, messaged us, left a suggestion on our forums, shown us support, believed in us and got involved in one way or another. Community means everything to the team here and we’re so thankful to have surrounded Portal Knights with such a supportive group of players.

As your Community Manager, I’m so unbelievably proud of everything you guys have done for us and I would like to personally thank you for absolutely rocking our forums and social channels. It’s an absolute pleasure to chat with you all daily, see your AWESOME creations, check out your streams and hear what you have to say. NEVER a day goes by where this community doesn’t make us smile in one way or another! That means everything to a CM. While it’s practically impossible for us to reply to every single one of you, please know that we do read your messages and we do listen. If we don’t reply to a message or a tweet, please don’t ever think we’re ignoring you! We might just be busy on another channel, planning something awesome behind the scenes or simply grabbing a bite to eat or catching up with some ZZZ’s. (CM’s need sleep too, you know?) 😉

Over the next couple of weeks, we plan to publish a survey to gather some feedback from both our Steam and console communities. Please use this opportunity to be as open and honest as you can be. The info we gather from those surveys will be passed onto the team to analyse and will be invaluable.

OK, it’s probably time to stop typing now… On behalf of the whole Portal Knights team, we’d like to thank you all for getting us where we are today. The future is looking bright and we hope you guys stick with us for the journey ahead, as we’ve entered such an exciting time in our development. We just want to carry this momentum forward and keep on developing Portal Knights into something even more special. So please, keep on supporting us! You’ve no idea how much it means to the team.

Thank you so much for believing in us and for believing in Portal Knights.

Oh… One final thing! If you come across any issues whatsoever and wish to submit a bug directly to our Support team, please use our bug submission form below. This method will ensure that your bug is seen by the team…

Portal Knights! Update v 1.0.2 is available to download now.

We have investigated an issue with ongoing Achievements which are being reset after the 1.0.0 Update of Portal Knights. This issue came up due to changes we had to make in our code.

Sadly we can't restore the lost progress in these Achievements. We apologize for all the inconvenience this has caused for several of our Early Access players.

With the release of this patch we have stopped this so from now on no player will run into this problem again.

The occurred problem only affected the ongoing (counting) Achievements of Portal Knights, all already fulfilled Achievements were not affected by this.

Fixes:
* Ongoing Achievements will not reset anymore.

Hofix Beta Branch Update v 1.0.3 Available NOW!

This is a beta update! Please only use this version if you were affected by one of the bugs in the list below. Before switching to this branch please backup your save files!

In order to switch to this beta version right click on Portal Knights in your Steam library and choose the beta tab. Open the dropdown list and select “portal_knights_beta”

Additions
• Option to toggle the split screen direction
• Host player can kick players now by right clicking their name on the map screen and choose “kick”. This kick is connected with a ban for the gamesession. After closing and reopening the session the kicked player can join again.
• Confirmation message for the Back to Title button
• New active portal VFX

Fixes
• Fixed: Broken or lost Characters after Crash or sudden disconnect in multiplayer sessions
• Fixed: Massive lags and stuttering while playing multiplayer. These fixes should improve the overall network traffic. Up to now we have recommended an upload speed of 2Mb/S for the hosting player. With these fixes we now lower the recommended upload speed to about 1Mb/S. However while these fixes improve the gameplay stability in multiplayer sessions for now they may cause longer loading screens on faster internet connections as we’ve had to set an upper bound for the upload speed. This will be changed in the next update. Please also keep in mind that larger island sizes will still end in longer loading times.
• Fixed: Full screen is not working correctly
• Fixed: Players can’t use the Steam UI to join sessions directly
• Fixed: Random Players can join Friends Only game sessions
• Fixed: Game crashes in rare cases when certain talents have been used
• Fixed: User is not able to put items into chests while their backpack is full

Hi everyone! We’re back with another Community Blog. Today, we want to discuss a number of topics, including our latest update and the introduction of one of our biggest community requests. Want to know more? Keep reading…

Steam Update v 1.1
Last week, we launched Update v 1.1 on Steam. This is our first major update since leaving Early Access in May so of course, we wanted to make it a good’un!

Update v 1.1 saw the introduction of all new content, community requests and a bunch of bug fixes. New features included the option to switch between horizontal and vertical split-screen, (something our community have been requesting for a while now) all-new pets and armor, a new active portal VFX, dungeon improvements, a new island, the Kolemis Temple Trials Event and much more!

If you’ve been with us for some time now, you’ll know what to expect next… Whenever we launch an update, we want to gather as much feedback as we can from you guys. Once we launch Update v 1.1 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we’ll be publishing a survey for our community to fill in. We’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts! Oh… And please remember to be as open and honest as you can be with us. We want know exactly how you feel about our latest update.

Console Update v 1.1
Don’t panic! It’s coming… Update v 1.1 is now in submission with Sony and Microsoft and once we have a launch date, we will let you guys know! Providing all goes well in submission, we should have that information pretty soon!

Be sure to keep an eye on our community channels for the latest info.

Players on Different Islands
Ahh… The ability to play on different islands during the same multiplayer session.

Now, we know our Steam community are absolutely desperate for this feature to come to the game and guess what… It is! (OK, you already knew that!) But what you don’t know is we’re planning to launch a beta branch on Steam that contains this feature very, very soon.

As in… Tomorrow!

That’s right! The team have been working flat out to bring this feature to Portal Knights and we’re almost there! The plan is to launch a beta branch on July 20th, and give you guys the opportunity to check it out before we implement it into a future update.

Oh… Just a word of warning for when the beta goes live. Please remember that you’ll be downloading the beta at your own risk. We highly recommend you back up your saves before downloading this version of Portal Knights. Stay tuned for more info!

Community Love and Support
Once again, we want to take a moment to thank you guys for your continued show of support. It means so much to the team and we hope you stick with us! As we’ve said many times already, we don’t plan to slow down anytime soon so please, continue to engage with us, continue to build awesome things and continue to support Portal Knights! We need you guys! 🙂

Portal Knights - Players On Different Islands - Beta Update v 1.1.1

We have just released a public beta hotfix which allows our community to play Portal Knights on different islands in the same multiplayer session.

How to switch to/from a beta branch
In order to switch between the regular and beta version of Portal Knights, do the following:
* In Steam, right-click on “Portal Knights” in the games library.
* Select “Properties”.
* In the tab “Betas” of the opened window select the desired version of the game form the drop down menu and close the window. ("portal_knights_podi")
* The game should now update automatically to the desired version. If it doesn’t seem to do so, please close Steam and reopen it.

PLEASE NOTE! All of your party MUST be in the same branch in order to play together. As this is a beta branch, we highly recommend you back up your saves beforehand.

How to find the Portal Knights Save-game
The Portal Knights save-game can be found locally on your hard drive. By default the location should be: C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\portal_knights
This path may vary for different languages! It is the standard path used by Windows games.

• The “Players on different Islands” (PODI) feature allows players in a multiplayer session or in a local split-screen session to visit islands individually. The feature can be toggled on and off in the session configuration menu. This menu can be accessed via the cog-wheel button on the character cards in the character selection menu.
• For the host player of a PODI session the technical requirements increase for RAM usage and upload bandwidth.
• There can be short lags during gameplay when co-players switch islands. This is a known issue and it will be further worked on for future builds.
• There is a rare crash that can occur for PODI when used in local split screen. It can happen when the non-travelling player has the worldmap open at the same time when the co-player is switching islands. It is advisable to not have the worldmap open constantly to avoid this issue.
• Some sounds like the island ambient sound behave incorrectly when playing PODI in local split screen. This is still being worked on.
• Sometimes, in rare occasions, there can be an endless loading screen.
• Some of the “Join”/”Leave” messages don’t show the correct content in all situations. This is being worked on.
• The recipes for blue doors and windows made out of blue concrete blocks have been fixed.
